Is a growth mindset really necessary to run a successful business?

4th May 2021 by Ballet Be Fit

Attractive woman working on a tablet in a home office.

You’ve heard people preach about believing in yourself. When you were a girl, your mum may have told you not to say the words  “I can’t”. You probably said those words when something was hard or you didn’t feel like trying.

But is that all there is to it? Can you change your life by shifting the way your think? Do your views around life and business make a difference?

When you hear the word mindset, you may think of some hosh posh viewpoint that doesn’t sound realistic. Let’s take a deeper look at what all the fuss is about.

What is a growth mindset?

There are two types of mindsets. A fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is when you have limiting beliefs in yourself. This type of thinking assumes that a person’s abilities and IQ determine what they can do with their life. They believe it can’t change or improve.

It’s hard for them to raise the bar. They can’t imagine a remarkably different future for themselves. You could go as far as to say that it’s impossible for them to succeed (but that may be a little harsh).

A growth mindset is the lovely opposite of a fixed mindset. This means that you can always learn how to do a skill or improve your abilities and talents. You can do anything that seems impossible now – with time, effort and practice.

Which one are you?

You can tell by how you react to failure. You may even have both when you have different options and scenarios. That’s normal. When you have a real growth mindset, you live your beliefs in yourself. These types of thinkers flip an obstacle or a setback into an opportunity to learn.

Why is a growth mindset important?

Developing this specific way of thinking helps you push past the rough spots ahead.  There are hurdles to learning something new or improving your skills. Changing the way you think, changes the way you learn. You have the power to train your mind to think infinitley, rather than limiting.

Learning how to develop abilities, talents, and skills opens a whole new life for you. This serves the people you want to reach. Explore, develop the know-how and get more out of your life.

What are the benefits of a growth mindset in business?

Failing is a good thing.

Successful business owners who welcome challenges. They are relentless in their efforts to see their goals come to life. When they fail and make mistakes, they learn from them. I say “when” because it will happen at some point. But how you react to your “oops” moment can aid you in success.

Bethany Hamilton’s arm got eaten by a shark. Richard Branson lives with dyslexia. Vincent Van Gough only sold one painting in his entire life1.

It can be heartbreaking when you don’t get to work with a client you value and believe in. Give yourself some time to wallow for a day or two. Go ahead, pencil that in. Then get right back into finding a solution and turning things around. Expect to see some tough times. Use those learning curves to hone in your focus on improving.

Develop a thick skin.

Prepare yourself for occasional rejection. That likely isn’t what you want to hear, especially if you are just starting your fitness business. Think about the times you have said no to something. A service that wasn’t right for your needs or the timing was bad. You didn’t decline the service because of the person. Likewise, people aren’t saying no to you, on a personal level.

You can’t control the actions of others. Yet, sometimes you may need to unleash your negotiating skills. Be willing to face an opposing opinion with grace and poise. You can’t win all of the potential clients but you can give it your best without pushing things too far. It just takes some practice and resilience.

Jump at the opportunity to invest in yourself.

Growth suggests that something gets bigger. Your son grew an inch last summer so his size increased, he is taller. The same works with your business. When you have a growth mindset, your business expands and thrives.

Making the decision to use your hard-earned money to invest inIt’s exciting to level up with a new laptop, extra fitness certifications, or a new dance space.  The thought of investing your hard-earned can cause anxiety.

I get it.

If you want to truly succeed as a FITpreneur, you must realize that there are always risks. Be prepared to deal with them. So go ahead, think BIG! You’ve got this.

Initiate conversation with potential clients.

Some parts of starting a business can be… uncomfortable. That means you are growing as an individual. One of the most difficult tasks as an entrepreneur is reaching out to find dream clients who love you. First, you will want to establish who your ideal client would be.

Reach out to the right audience with your marketing. This expands your business while increasing profits. This can feel foreign in the beginning. Practice makes perfect, right? Take a deep breath. Your skills at client acquisition will improve with time.

Ok, how do I grow my mindset?

Everyone has one of these two mindsets.  Yours exists because of your experiences, what you have observed, and what you were taught. These beliefs can be limiting or freeing.

Consider giving these practical ideas a chance.

Believe you are capable. This requires effort. Give daily affirmations a try. These convince yourself that you deserve the results – growth and achievement.

Avoid blaming others or your circumstances when things don’t work out. It’s important to understand that you are responsible for your future. So the next time you catch yourself blaming someone or something, take a step back. Think about your involvement in the result. Learn from it and move on.

Get excited about learning. Don’t let fear overpower your growth. Instead, ask questions and increase your knowledge. Get inspired by how much you don’t know – yet.

Allow yourself to fail. Remember the famous influencers and role models who failed miserably? They prove that failure leads to success. Embrace it.

Step out of your comfort zone. It’s easy to stay in our safe place. But that isn’t where growth happens. Breakthrough your bubble so you succeed too.
