“I wanted to put my knowledge to good use…”
I’m a former dancer who trained with the Royal Ballet and worked in the dance and theatre industry. I stepped away from the world of dance to focus on my family and it was whilst on this break I realised that I was not looking after myself. I felt lethargic and out of shape which I struggled with after working in a profession where you had to be in shape. I joined a gym and started attending fitness classes which I enjoyed however I missed dancing and knew the benefits of ballet, all those difficult standing postures which are held for minutes on end are the moves that make stronger and leaner muscles, so I asked the gym owner if I could put together a fitness class which was based on the ballet technique with a dance feel. This was not only for myself but to help other ladies in my position with their fitness too. I wanted to put my knowledge to good use.
I was very nervous about how popular they’d be and whether after a few years away from teaching I’d still be able to do it. I spent weeks preparing the class, working with the gym owner and a physio to make sure of the delivery, the benefits and that the class was suitable for any body type or fitness level, young and old! until I got what I felt was the right class. I then decided on a start date and worked on attracting ladies to join the class. I remember when the day arrived for me to take the class I was so nervous, would ladies turn up, would they like the class. To my relief the class went better than I could ever have imagined and before I knew it I was holding regular BalletBeFit classes.
It was not long before I was approached by other dancers/ fitness professionals to share my strategies as a coach and mentor so they could and have their own business holding BalletBeFit classes. As popularity grew I found I couldn’t reach out enough so I decided to turn BalletBeFit into an online community in 2016.
This has been a real turning point and has enabled me to really reach out, and not only help women improve their fitness levels and feel the benefits of BalletBeFit but also help women to have an independent business doing something they love, keep in shape and still have the time for the family.
