It seems that wherever we turn there are pictures of perfect-looking people working out at the gym, without a hair out of place or a bead of sweat on their bodies.
But let’s face it, that’s not the truth and is a complete misrepresentation of how most of us look and feel after a workout. In fact, for many people it’s these images that put them off exercise completely.
If all the Lycra and spandex wasn’t bad enough then these images can push you over the edge. But that doesn’t have to be.
If the thought of going to the gym brings you out in a cold sweat then find something that you enjoy doing that will help you raise your heart rate and make you out of puff.
It could be something as simple as skipping in the garden for a minute at a time, playing rounders with the kids in the park or taking up a new hobby such as rowing, kayaking or indoor rock climbing.
All of these activities will push you physically and mentally and as they say, variety is the spice of life, so why not give something new a try. If you love it then you know that you’ll look forward to doing it each week and will enjoy each session.
Trying something new pushes you out of you comfort zone, but most of the time you’ll be amongst other people in the same position as you, so you’ll have immediate rapport with your peers and feel at ease with what you’re doing.
We all workout to look and feel better but if you don’t enjoy it then it’s a huge chore and you can feel exhausted just motivating yourself to join in. But if you find something you love to do makes all the difference, as fitness should be fun.
If you enjoy what you’re doing then you’re more likely to look forward to attending sessions, you’ll push yourself further when you’re there and you’ll feel better about yourself and your achievements afterwards.
So if you dread going to the gym or can’t be bothered to try the latest fad or trend then stop yourself in your tracks and really think about what you enjoy, find an activity that suits you, join up and have fun!
